Music Reviews
The Black Keys are a cool, blues-rock duo who are becoming more famous with every album they release. It’s safe to say that they are the more modern version of The White Stripes because they have the same sort of sound and have the same type of elements to their band, but made for today.
Guitarist and vocalist, Dan Auerbach, and drummer, Patrick Carney formed their band in the early 2000’s and their music has been a hit ever since. Their debut album, The Big Come up was a hit and got strong sales and reviews. After that album did so well, they really began to make music more consistently and more and more people liked that as they made more music.
Brothers was released in 2010 was their strongest album yet so far, it featured the singles, Tighten Up, Howlin’ for You, and Next Girl. These songs have been featured in popular movies such as The Hangover. They have won Grammy awards and hit the Billboard Top 200’s for that album.
Their music is so unique and that’s why I fell in love with it. I can’t think of any band who sounds anything like them. They actually use their instruments instead of any computer made junk and to me, is really appealing. I have always liked listening to the old school bands from the 70’s, and since there aren’t any more of those really, The Black Keys do a really good job at doing their music the way it used to be.
Their 2011 release of their album many awards and got number two on the Billboard Top 200 for the hit single on that album, Lonely Boy. This album is personally my favorite. I enjoy everything about it because it is their most blues-rock album yet. I am so excited to see the new songs and albums that The Black Keys will come out with in the time to come because all of their material just keeps getting better and better! I can definitely say that The Black Keys are one of my favorite bands on the market.

The Lumineers recently became a new found sensation when their first single came out, Ho Hey, on June 14th, 2012. This American folk rock band has been together since 2005 and is based in Denver, Colorado. Without the help of Spotify, which is an app on several devices, The Lumineers wouldn’t be where they are today. Spotify was actually the reason they got on the Billboard Top 100. With their fame increasing, they were nominated for two Grammy Awards, best new artist and best Americana album. The five people that make up this group are Wesley Schultz, Jeremiah Fraites, Neyla Pekarek, Stelth Ulvang, and Ben Wahamaki. The band actually found one of their members (Neyla Pekarek) after she had put an ad on Craigslist for a person to play the cello in a band. Overall, I believe The Lumineers will go far; their music isn’t typical of today’s, which makes it more appealing.
Taylor Swift’s new album RED is just blowing off the charts. Young Swift at the age of twenty-four has already produced three albums before RED such as Fearless, Speak Now, and Our Song which are all great albums to listen to. On this new album Taylor Swift’s singles are more of a country pop genre. The song that really hit me was “State of Grace” written by her, seven out of the sixteen songs are written by her. “State of Grace” is about when you first fall in love, all the possibilities and how it could turn out. The lyrics tell an amazing story that someone can connect to in any way. Taylor worked very hard on this album, anyone could tell in the songs We are Never Getting Back Together and I Knew You Were Trouble. Those are her two biggest hits on the album. A lot of the inspiration for these two songs and many others and of hers, comes from ex-boyfriends and past relationships. But the artist that really inspired her career was Shania Twain. The songs on this new album are all realistic and could happen to anyone. Fans just adore her and the love stories she incorporates in the tracks. Some songs on the track are upbeat and about revenge but others are slow tempo but it allows anyone to know what she was really feeling when she was writing it. By far this is her best album yet, but she still has so much potential and her career is far from being over.
Jennifer Lopez is a 4 in 1 , she is a singer , actress, entrepreneur, and fashion designer. She is from New York but her nationality is Puerto Rican and she expresses it in her music. Early in her career she was an actress , she still is but that is what she was fully focused on in the early 1990s. In 1999 is when she sparked an interest in music. Her first live video was Let’s Get Loud it was an upbeat tune to get people up and dancing, most of her songs are easy to dance to and they have a fun sound. She also has done a duet with Marc Anthony the song was all in Spanish is was called No Me Ames , a couple years after that they did get married. Her older songs such as Love Don’t Cost A Thing , Get Right, and Jenny From The
Block were all big hits in the early 2000s. Her type of music is Latin Pop, R&B, Pop and Dance Pop, which is clearly shown through her music. She took a break on her music to focus on her acting then about 2 years ago she came out with On The Floor another classic hit for J-Lo. She was a judge on American Idol for 2 years then left to spend more time with her kids. I give her music 5 stars for always being original and fun.

Carrie Underwood’s album, Blown Away, is her fourth in seven years. This album, released May 1, 2012, features the country and pop venue that she is so well noted for. Her singing career really took off in 2004 when she auditioned for American Idol. Early in the competition, it was predicted by Simon Cowell that she would not only win the competition, but outsell all previous winners from American Idol. Carrie Underwood certainly fulfilled this prediction.
Blown Away consists of 14 tracks of which six she co-wrote. It starts off with Good Girl which she wrote with Chris DeStefano and Ashley Gorley, and debuted in February, 2012. It was an instant success. Next, is the single Blown Away, of which the CD is named after. This is, not surprisingly, in the country-pop genre. Who Are You is the last track in this CD. This song has a catchy twist which ends the CD on a “fun note”.
A high recommendation is certainly deserved for this album. Whether you are a country-music person of old or new, she adds so much to this, even incorporating some pop music, that all are sure to love it.

Everyone loves a good pop rock band that will provide us with nothing but toe-tapping tunes. Formed in Scottsdale, Arizona, The Summer Set is one of those bands you listen to and think “why are they still playing their shows at small clubs?”
In 2007, high school brothers John Gomez (guitar, back vocals, piano) and Stephen Gomez (bass) started a band and asked good friends Brian Dales (lead vocals), Jess Bowen (drums) and Josh Montgomery (guitar) to join them. Within the next year, they released three EPs: Meet Me On The Left Coast, …In Color, and Love The Love You Have. These are thought of by most as their best work, and I agreed until I heard their full length albums Love Like This (2011) and the most anticipated Everything’s Fine (2009).
During the fall of last year, they toured with good friends The Downtown Fiction and All Time Low, and though I had entered the venue just to see The Downtown Fiction, I came out a Summer Set fan. They opened their set with their most popular hit “Chelsea”, which was written about Dales’ ex-girlfriend Chelsea Kane (actress), and ended their set with their very blunt new single “F*** U Over”. I was very pleased with how great of a show they put on. They had so much energy and you could tell they truly love doing what they do, and I personally believe that’s one of the most important things about being a part of a band. After witnessing what great performers they are, I wish I would have checked them out sooner and caught them on some of their previous tours. Oh another note, though, they came outside the venue afterwards to take pictures and chat with some fans. How cool!
I was excited to find that they will be heading out this spring on the Wake up and Be Awesome Tour, their very first headlining tour! If you don’t get to check them out then, they will also be a part of Vans Warped Tour this summer. Visit www.thesummersetband.com for more details!
